The study used two groups of mice: one with unilateral ureteral obstruction, where one ureter is tied off to cause kidney scarring, and one group of aged mice. The mice were given one of three drugs — semaglutide, tirzepatide or GLP-3 R — and their kidneys were compared across groups. The researchers also ran the same drugs against HK-2 cells, a human kidney cell line, in the lab. They measured fibrosis and inflammation in the kidney tissue, and looked at which cell signalling pathways were affected by each drug.
