Male Sprague-Dawley rats were made diabetic with streptozotocin, a chemical that destroys insulin-producing cells, and then some were given retatrutide while others were not. The study also included non-diabetic rats, some of which received retatrutide alone. Over the course of the experiment, the researchers measured blood glucose and body weight, and tested spatial learning and memory using the Morris Water Maze and a passive avoidance test. They also examined brain tissue for signs of inflammation and damage, measuring levels of inflammatory molecules and proteins linked to nerve health. The paper reports that retatrutide lowered blood sugar but did not prevent weight loss, and that diabetic rats given the drug performed better on some memory tasks than untreated diabetic rats, though not all. Brain inflammation was reduced in the treated diabetic rats, and their brain tissue looked more preserved, but the drug did not improve memory in non-diabetic rats beyond normal levels.
