The study used Caenorhabditis elegans, a type of microscopic worm often used in aging research, and gave them GHK-Cu, a naturally occurring peptide bound to copper. The worms were divided into groups, with some receiving GHK-Cu and others not, and the researchers tracked them over their lifetimes. They measured lifespan, movement, feeding rhythm, waste elimination, and stress resistance, and also looked at the worms' mitochondria, the parts of cells that produce energy. The paper reports that worms given GHK-Cu lived longer, moved better, and showed less buildup of aging-related pigments and fats. The researchers also found that GHK-Cu kept mitochondria working better by preserving their energy output and reducing age-related damage, and it switched on certain genes linked to stress protection and longevity.
