Twenty-four male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups of six: one group had no procedure, one got BPC 157 alone, one had ischemia-reperfusion injury, and one had the injury plus BPC 157. The injury was made by clamping the abdominal aorta for 45 minutes, then letting blood flow return for 2 hours. BPC 157 (20 µg/kg) was injected into the abdomen at the 45th minute of ischemia in the two groups that received it. The researchers measured blood levels of oxidative stress markers (MDA, TOS, SOD, TAS), gene expression for inflammation, cell death, and oxygen sensing, and looked at muscle tissue under a microscope to score damage and collagen buildup. The paper reports that in the injured rats given BPC 157, oxidative stress markers dropped, antioxidant levels rose, cell-death genes were downregulated, inflammation was reduced, and muscle structure looked better than in injured rats not given the compound.
