Rats that had one adrenal gland removed under anaesthetic were given BPC 157 by mouth, at either 10 micrograms or 10 nanograms per kilogram, starting right after surgery. The researchers watched them at 15 minutes, 5 hours, and 24 hours, measuring blood pressure in the aorta and major veins, checking organs for bleeding and damage, and testing blood for markers of stress and clotting. They found that rats given BPC 157 had less organ hemorrhage and thrombosis, and their blood pressure problems were reduced, with improved blood flow through a backup vein called the azygos. The paper reports that BPC 157 also lessened damage to the remaining adrenal gland and shifted the gland's weight increase, but cortisol levels stayed very low. The authors suggest the compound works by balancing nitric oxide and reducing oxidative stress, but they do not claim it is a cure, only that it shows effects worth further study.
